Informal Government Formation Talks Commence
Following last week’s General Election for the formation of the 34th Dáil, informal discussions on the formation of the 34th Government are expected to commence today.
It is expected that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will form the next Government, alongside a third smaller party or a number of Independents.
Finna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin and Fine Gael leader, Simon Harris are in Edinburgh today for a meeting of the British-Irish Council and both leaders have indicated that they will have opportunities for informal discussions while they are away.
Speaking to RTÉ News, Mr Martin said: “It's a very busy night, tonight and tomorrow, so opportunities will be limited enough, obviously there are informal opportunities for us to touch base.”
It comes as Fianna Fáil emerged as the largest political party in the 34th Dáil, with 48 seats. They are followed by Sinn Féin who won 39 seats. Meanwhile, Fine Gael emerged as the third largest party with 38 seats.
With Fianna Fáil winning the largest number of seats, Mr Martin said: "That has to be reflected ultimately in the configuration and composition of policy and structure of government," he said following his parliamentary party meeting earlier today.”
However, he has not ruled out the possibility of a rotating Taoiseach.
It is expected that formal Government formation talks will take place over the coming weeks but it is likely that a new Government will not be in place until the new year.
